Rustic Handbaked Scones for a Devon Cream Tea Wedding

We had a lovely day at Millbrook Estate for an intimate wedding for two recently. Rustic hand-baked heart shaped scones were made with lashings of Devon clotted cream and locally made jam and one of our lovely chocolate and strawberry cakes. Hannah looked stunning and they had a really fabulous afternoon just chilling out in the Summer House at Millbrook Estate. There is something very magical about a wedding in North Devon and the Calla Lillies outside the Summer House were lovely in full bloom.

We love cream teas and being part of making a couple’s day even more special with locally produced Devon foods.

Afternoon Tea for Joanna and Kevin’s Wedding in North Devon at Millbrook Estate

Here are some photos taken recently after a recent wedding ceremony for Joanna and Kevin.   It was a scorchingly hot day here in North Devon, but the trees provided lots of shade up on the decking.

The happy couple asked for our full Afternoon Tea with sandwiches, scones, cake and lashings of tea.

Joanna also had one of our picnics the day before, how she managed to get into her dress I do not know. We do have a habit of stuffing our hampers full of food!  Here is a lovely testimonial we have just received:

“I would definitely recommend the Vintage Party Company.  Carolyn arranged the most amazing vintage tea party for our wedding, the food, china plates/cups, music and decoration were just beautiful and made our wedding very special and perfect.  The food was prepared with such attention to detail and was absolutely delicious.  Carolyn went over and above what both my husband and I expected and we were overwhelmed with the how much care and thought Carolyn had put into the tea party, and as for the beautiful strawberry and cream wedding cake-just delicious.  Anyone looking for a special vintage tea for any occasion I would have no hesitation in recommending the Vintage Tea Party”

Safe Food Catering at your Wedding or Party

I felt compelled to write this blog as recently I have been contacted by brides who are planning a DIY wedding, it’s great idea, however care and attention MUST be taken when providing food.

If you are planning on offering food to your guest that you are making yourself or a close family member is making for you for free, maybe as their contribution to your day, then ensure they abide by a few simple hygiene rules to ensure safe food standards – found here.  However, if you are planing on paying them or in fact anyone else whether in cash or goods this is classified as a business transaction, and the Law in the UK is as follows where food preparation is concerned:

“Any business dealing with food is heavily regulated by Regulation (EC) No. 852/2004 on the hygiene of foodstuffs and the Food Hygiene Regulations 2006, which replaced the Food Safety Regulations 1995. This regulation applies to England, but there are equivalent regulations for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. There is little difference between this and the 1995 law, but the main change is that you must now put food safety management procedures in place, and keep up-to-date records of these.  These regulations can be found in a booklet entitled ‘Food hygiene – a guide for businesses’ published by the Food Standards Agency.  You are also required to register your premises with the environmental health service at your local authority at least 28 days before opening – this is still applicable even if you are using your own kitchen at home. If you use more than one premises you will have to register them all.  If you move premises or house you must immediately tell your local authority so that they can attend once again and inspect your premises your previous certificate is invalid as soon as you move. You will need to have taken a food hygiene course and received a completion certificate.  These can be completed online now and it is not necessary to attend a local college, and also Insure yourself and your business in case of any claims made against you.”

Always remember, could you live with yourself if you had invited someone to cook/prepare food for you and one of your guests ends up with food poisoning on the day, which could result in death?  Yes, it’s THAT serious.  If you had a chance to watch the Food Inspectors Series 2 on the BBC they quoted that the largest percentage of food poisoning is caused in the home or by amateur cooks who do not follow safe practices in hygiene, this includes family and friends who believe they are helping you!

If you are booking a caterer, cake decorator or any company providing you with food before booking them you are entitled to ask to see the following:
~ Certificate of Insurance
~ “Scores on the Doors” Grading issued by your local Environmental Health Dept.
~ Current Level II Food Safety Certificate – exam must be retaken every three years, so check the date!

If any of the above cannot be supplied then DO NOT purchase any food from them or their business!

Your life and that of your friends is in your hands!

Please feel free to point friends and family towards this post, or even reblog if you feel it would be of benefit.

This is what you are looking for at any establishment that produces foods, for example caterers, pubs, restaurants, cake decorators – all have to have one of these:

Vintage Valentine Tea Party – 14th February

With Valentine’s Day due why not treat your loved one to a vintage Valentines Tea Party.   A Vintage Valentine Party is a super way of celebrating an intimate afternoon tea together with lovely food, and romantic music, or if you like party atmosphere why not extend your invitations to friends and family.   To make it more fun choose an era and all dress for that time period, for example: Titanic and Downton Abbey,  Board Walk Empire/Prohibition of the 1920s and 1930s, Miss Marple and tea in St Mary Mead, VE day, Darling Buds of May, and so on.  If you cannot hold your party on Valentine’s Day hold it on the Saturday or Sunday before or after.  These are spiffing days for parties and if you have an afternoon party it gives you time to recover from too much tea drinking (ahem!) if you are due back in work the following day – perfick!

We can supply you with decorations, vintage china, silver ware, candelabras, sandwiches and cakes. We will deliver the day before if you are supplying your own food, or on the day if we are supplying your food, and collect the day after. You will not be expected to clean the hired items, we will do this for you after collection for no extra charge. You will also need to decide if you require the china to be matching, all one pattern and colourway, or mis-matched, which is the most popular and more fun.

For a party of 8, (or 4 couples) we supply just the right amount of crockery, decorations and suitable tableware for £7.95 per person and you supply your own food. You will be hiring the following:
8 x cups, saucers, teaplates
8 savoury knives
8 dessert forks
8 teaspoons
2 milk jugs
1 sugar bowl & tongs
2 large teapots (6-8 cups in each)
2 large sandwich plates
1 single tier cake place
2 two tier cakes stands
1 tablecloth & 8 napkins
1 metal jug for flowers (you supply the red roses!)
1 candelabra

If you would like us to supply finger sandwiches and cakes for your guests the price is £10 per person.
We usually supply two types of finger sandwiches, you can choose from:
Salmon & Cream Cheese
Egg Mayo & Cress
Ham & Mustard

You can choose from two of the following cakes:
Victoria Sponge
Lemon Drizzle Cake
Fruit Loaf
Scones, Jam & Clotted Cream

We can also supply champagne, Belgian chocolates, iced cup cakes, and other luxuries at additional costs if required and depending on your budget vintage games, outdoor ludo, croquet and chess, background music of the era you have chosen, plus ideas for table gifts for your guests. We also have staff available to wait on you at extra costs.  They will be dressed in vintage style black with white pinnies and will serve, clean up and remove all hired items on the day charged at an hourly rate.

Please Note: The above prices do not include delivery or breakages insurance which are part of our standard Terms and Conditions.
