Vintage Afternoon Cream Tea Wedding at Hartland Abbey, North Devon

We were asked in the summer of 2015 to cater for a wedding celebration and naming ceremony at Hartland Abbey, it was a truly lovely day. We took along a Devon cream tea with large kilners holding strawberries. Guests were treated to a glass of prosecco and each glass was adorned with an edible flower.

Here are the photos of the marquee and our catering:

Vintage Country Afternoon Tea Wedding in a Village Hall Setting in Devon

I have always believed that if it rains on your wedding day it’s good luck! On Friday 1st of august it rained, actually North Devon REALLY rained, but this didn’t affect Hannah and Sam’s wedding plans. They were married in a lovely church in Bideford and held their reception at Weare Giffard village hall. They chose blues as their colour theme and hired our vintage china and blue and cream tablecloths. Hannah used simple jam jars with Hydrangeas and Gypsophila to create a country theme.

We supplied our Afternoon Tea with additional canapes. Hannah chose to have a cake table so that her guests could come and go for cakes as they pleased over the afternoon and evening. We brought along our traditional cakes, strawberries in bowls and macrons, and her mum made her wedding cake, the two top layers were biscuit cake and the bottom a lovely rich fruit cake as you can see from the photos it was really lovely and everyone enjoyed a slice.

Below are the photos we took of the hall and tables. Lydia (my assistant) and I had a lovely afternoon looking after all their guests and were really pleased to have been part of their special day.

Anniversary Vintage Afternoon Tea in Devon

Not only do we love weddings, but love it when the couple we have looked after come back to us the following year to celebrate their anniversary with an Afternoon Tea

The girls chose to have one of our luscious carrot cakes with cream cheese filling and topping to add to their scones and tea sandwiches.

We would like to wish Nikki and Kelly a happy anniversary and hope they enjoy their stay in North Devon this week.

Afternoon Tea v High Tea

On a beautiful sunny day there is nothing more lovely and typically British than Afternoon Tea, but this is not to be confused with High Tea, which is a completely different meal.

Afternoon Tea at The Ritz

Afternoon Tea is taken around 4pm and consists of dainty finger foods such as smoked salmon sandwiches, scones and cakes and is always served with a pot of freshly brewed tea. There are many variations to Afternoon Tea depending on the establishment or personal taste, but the amount of food served was and still is for the purpose of filling the gap between lunch and evening supper. Historically Afternoon Tea was a social event and taken in or out of the home by the upper classes who would perhaps meet at tea houses, hotels or visit the home of a friend

High Tea

High Tea is something completely different and is a much more substantial meal traditionally eaten by the working population who had no time for afternoon frivolities and wanted a more substantial meal as they were famished after leaving work. There was also no supper in the evening as High Tea was a heavier meal of meat and vegetables designed to last until the following morning. It is now known in most households in the UK as simply “tea”.

Typical Afternoon Tea would be:
Finger sandwiches of smoked salmon, cucumber, egg and cress, ham and mustard.
Victoria sponge, scones and fancies.
All eaten on small china plates with silver cutlery and small dainty tea napkins.
A large pot of freshly brewed tea (made with leaves, not a tea bag.)

Typical High Tea would be:
Meat and vegetable based foods, pies and cheese dishes. Very much what is now classified as a home cooked meal and still eaten in the early evening.
